Ayurveda In Ceylon

Considered by many to be the oldest of the healing arts in the world, Ayurveda is a holistic approach that treats the root cause of imbalance in both body & mind. Treatments are tailored to the distinct pattern of energy, or Dosha, present in every individual.

DOSHA THEORY

The three Doshas – Vatha, Pitha & Kapha – exist in varying degrees within each of us. By understanding your dominant Dosha, Ayurveda can restore balance, expel toxins & improve overall wellbeing.

This time-honoured science has proven effective even in managing chronic conditions, offering countless benefits with the remarkable advantage of having no side effects.Ayurveda’s knowledge is believed to have been divinely gifted — passed from the Gods to the saints & sages of the island during deep meditation.

Ceylon’s Ayurveda Heritage

The Ceylonese tradition of Ayurveda blends Desheeya Chikitsa (traditional Sinhala medicine) with elements of the Siddha system & the Unani medicine of Greece.Ancient kings, many of whom were skilled physicians themselves, championed Ayurveda as both a science & a way of life. King Buddhadasa (398 AD), famed for remarkable surgical procedures on both humans & animals, authored the Sarartha Sangrahaya — a comprehensive manuscript of Ayurveda medical knowledge still referenced by physicians in Sri Lanka today.

Ayurveda in Ceylon was not valued solely for its medicinal power; it was also cherished for beauty & rejuvenation. Royalty indulged in secret Ayurveda therapies to restore vitality & enhance natural beauty — a legacy immortalised in the famed Sigiriya frescoes, where the island’s most celebrated depictions of feminine grace still captivate visitors.

Ayurveda Today

Today, in our fast-paced modern world, this ancient science continues to offer profound solutions to wellness — restoring balance, calming the mind & nurturing the soul. Its enduring promise is the same as it was for the kings & queens of old: to bring harmony to body, mind & spirit and to help each of us live in alignment with nature’s wisdom.
